
Welcome to Department of Political Science
The teaching of Political Science at Osmania University began in the year 1919 in the Department of History. In 1948, separate department of Political Science was established. New courses have been added from time to time. Research activity in the department increased extensively over the years. The department expanded in terms of faculty, students and research scholars.
The department has the distinction of being headed by eminent persons such as Prof. Haroon Khan Sharwani, first Head of the Department, Prof. Rasheeduddin Khan, Prof. G. Ram Reddy, Prof. N.G. Rajurkar etc. Prof. Rasheeduddin Khan was nominated to Rajya-Sabha and subsequently he was on the faculty of the department of Political Science, J.N.U. Prof. N.G. Rajukar of the department delivered series lecturers to the members of the Parliament in 1995. Prof. G. Ram Reddy who headed the Department was elevated to the position of Vice-Chancellor of Osmania University. Open University system in India is the brain child of Prof. G. Ram Reddy. He was instrumental in designing and also in the establishment of Andhra Pradesh Open University. He headed both A.P. Open University and Indira Gandhi National Open University as the first Vice-Chancellor. He was elevated to the position of Vice-Chairman of the Common Wealth of Open Learning. He had the distinction of heading the University Grants Commission as its Chairman. He was the founder Chairman of National Assessment and Accreditation Council. He headed Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR) and was the founder Director of ICSSR (South Regional Center, Hyderabad). He was the recipient of many awards at the national and international level.
Members of the Department of Political Science have the distinction of heading some of the important research institutions like ICSSR (South Regional Center, Hyderabad). Center for Indo-American Studies. A good number of faculty members had the opportunity of visiting foreign universities on academic assignment. In addition to this the department is known for contributing its faculty services to various organizations, associated with the higher education in the State and Country. This apart some of the members of the faculty are closely associated with the Voluntary / non-Governmental Organizations associated with Farmers, Women, Dalits, Environmental etc., issues.
Political Science is offered as a course of study at the U.G., P.G., M. Phil. and Ph. D level. Further it is offered through distance mode at U.G. and P.G. levels. Presently Political Science is offered at P.G. level in University College of Arts and Social Sciences and three other constituent colleges, viz. Nizam College, Osmania University College for Women and the Post Graduate College at Secunderabad.
